Bewitched became one of television’s biggest hits after premiering in 1964, with Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha Stevens and Dick York’s Darren captivating millions of viewers. But behind the comedy, serious problems gradually changed the series.
York suffered a devastating back injury years earlier while filming They Came to Cordura, leaving him in chronic pain and eventually forcing him to leave Bewitched after collapsing during production in 1969. Dick Sargent replaced him as Darren, but the change was never explained, confusing longtime fans and contributing to declining ratings. At the same time, Montgomery faced creative frustration and personal difficulties, including the breakdown of her marriage to director William Asher. By 1972, she had decided she would not continue for another season, effectively ending the series. Yet audiences were never given a proper farewell. The final episode, “The Truth, Nothing But the Truth, So Help Me, Sam,” aired without being promoted as a finale and even reused an earlier storyline, leaving Bewitched to disappear quietly.
